The Inner Workings of an Industrial Air Compressor

Ever wonder how your industrial air compressor’s suction valve loader works? Read on to find out more about this fascinating mechanism. Let’s start with the basics. The suction valve unloaders in an industrial air compressor consist of self-adjusting processes that allow the plunger to tip the suction valve reed. A complete cycle of the process allows for the regulation of the pressure of air entering the air tank, depending on the loader valve position. Please note, not all industrial air compressor models require unloader assemblies. For best results, the unloaders are recommended for compressors with which continuous run operations will be performed.

For unloading to occur, the air tank pressure overcomes the pressure on the pilot valve. This leads to the check ball being unseated, so air flows through the unloader assembly. The industrial air compressor continues operating at the unloaded position until the air tank pressure drops below the lowest operational level. When the lowest operational level is successfully attained by the unloader valve, the direction of the ball is reversed, shutting off the flow of air into the air tank. As the drive continues, the compressor loads and resumes the operation without limiting the processing of the required number of runs per unit time. It is highly recommended that the operator is familiar with the positioning of these valves on the industrial air compressor.  

In instances where dual control operations are possible, the start and stop operations are controlled by a knuckled knob that controls both the pilot and unloader valves. At this point, the unloading pressure is regulated by repeatedly turning the adjustment hex nuts either clockwise or counterclockwise. The clockwise adjustment increases pressure, while the counterclockwise direction lowers it. For effective outcomes, all industrial air compressor machines come fitted with auto-adjusting systems with minimal requirement for human intervention.
